Friday’s Hunt 2016-2.17

It is time again for Teresa's fun meme Friday Hunt. Every Friday we are give clues and we endeavor to meet these clues, so I am ready!

Starts with 'Q'. The New York City borough of Queens is a perfect 'Q', this shot from early 1961 in the parking lot of Kiddy City in Douglaston a long gone amusement park. The kiddies here are my sisters Michele, Claudia and Vicki, the car Grandpa's 1961 Dodge Seneca...
And to keep the 'Q' in focus, how about these quintet of quackers on the Housatonic River in Shelton, CT
Week's Favorite. Now that we have our magnets advertising our Valley-Voice LLC e-publishing business on my van, it stands out nicely. Here is a favorite view of subject vehicle in downtown Derby, CT
Fall/Spring. Patti captured the autumnal colors of the lower Naugatuck River valley. Taken from the hilltop of Osbornedale State Park, the treetop hues are a wonderful look at the season. Thanks Teresa!

Friday’s Hunt 2016-2.16

We welcome Friday, as it allows us the next installment of Teresa's fun meme, Friday Hunt  Now armed with our weekly clues, let's begin...

Starts with 'P'. I choose Pennsylvania, on the old US-22 at the WV-PA state line, the always lovely Patti at the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile   in Paris.

Week's Favorite: Bomba's Farm in neighboring Seymour, with one pumpkin draped in pink in honor of Seymour Pink Day, highlighting breast cancer awareness this month. Seymour Pink has been a wonderful resource for us since Patti's five-year travel since her diagnosis and treatment...
Whole. How about a whole pizza made with parmesan, white beans and escarole at our favorite pizza place, Marco Pizzeria in neighboring Derby. Thanks again Teresa!

Wordless Wednesday - Remembering 9-11

The terrible day in 2001 is remembered every year - the simply ceremony on the small town green of Derby CT. The fire department and others in the stood by the memorial with steel from Ground Zero by the twin towers and stones to remember Flight 93. The Code 5-5-5 is rung from a bell to commemorate the loss of the NYC firefighters and service providers - a poignant reminder of those who selflessly ran toward the danger...more WW can be found at NC Sue

Shadow Shot Sunday - Derby Green Market

In our neighboring city of Derby CT, there is a new farm market on the green, once a week. On the traditional and hilly New England park, I looked around  for subjects for this week's Shadow Shot Sunday 2. And I located a few, and they include vendor test, the town gazebo, a restaurant chef cooking and what I believe to be the ultimate BLT sandwich - all leaving unique and perhaps tasty shadows...

Friday Hunt, 2016-23

It is Friday and time again for Teresa's fun meme Friday Hunt. We are given the clues and we look high and wide for pics that match. I think that I have!

Starts with 'W'. I have two, the left being the 1940 Whitestone Bridge, over the East River between Bronx and Queens NYC. To the right is the 1931 George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River between Manhattan and New Jersey.I've used pics of bothnumber of posts, but just love driving these 1930-40s soaring suspension bridges, although I leave the photo taking to the passenger :)

Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, I-678 South. Taken Oct.2014
George Washington Bridge, I-95 South. Taken August 2000

Week's Favorite: This is the entrance to the Derby Greenway which goes alongside the Naugatuck River. It looks so nice who wouldn't want to take a stroll?

Rough: I suppose that this view is more hard than rough, but the rocks along the banks of the Housatonic River in Shelton CT. I could make for a rough landing, although the ducks don't seem to mind...

SOOC - Soft and subtle sunset

For this week's post in Straight Out of the Camera - SOOC, Patti captured the sunset from last Thursday from Derby CT over the Housatonic River. The trestle offers a nice demarkcation between sky and water and this slightly pixelated phone photo looks almost like an Impressionist painting of a very nice evening in the Spring...

Shadow Shot Sunday - Spring in the Aire...

Spring is here, but a cool-isa Spring season so far in Southern New England. However, for Shadow Shot Sunday 2, the days are longer and brighter at least. So a shadowy view over the pond at Witek Park in neighboring Derby. The shadows fall from the trees in a textural sort of design enhanced by the breeze. I await the feel of the season in the air while enjoying the view...

Shadow Shot Sunday - Bangles Bathed in Shadow

This is a different sort of post by myself for Shadow Shot Sunday 2, featuring jewelry instead of anything else. While given to little in the way of adornment for myself aside from a wedding band and watch, I appreciate the working the designing and making of jewelry. So Patti wrote a newsletter article featuring Derby jewelry maker Nancy Dreishpoon of their downtown business Sam and Nan. These two photos represent the artistry of Nan and the idea of making jewelry to suit any taste. And shadows emerged too! Style and shadow go hand in hand (or ring finger, or neck or...)

Friday Hunt, 2016-09

It is time again for Teresa's fun meme Friday Hunt. In this week's edition, the three subjects this week are: Starts with 'I', Weeks's Favorite and Something Blue. I can happily comply :)

Starts with 'I'

In our small city of Ansonia, the mayor authorized the purchase of a portable ice rink that's placed on Nolan Field, the football home of the Ansonia H.S. Chargers - in football season that is. With no refrigeration, the cold weather would keep the ice ready - but not that much in this warm-ish winter, and Public Works has disassembled it for the season. However, it was open and we see a mom showing her little one the way to keep steady on skates, and two students who skate competitively, the 15 year old on our right already having won a championship at Lake Placid...

Week's Favorite
At the Ansonia Ice Skating Rink, an enterprising person thought that in our urban enclave, a place to solicit donations of ice skates for those who would like to try skating. A noble idea, and happily, there was a donation!

Something Blue
An morning sky over the 1889 Sterling Opera House in neighboring Derby. It is really something blue, a nice winter sky with the moon still peering at us. Winter often is cold but the seasonal skies are always very attractive. As always, thanks Teresa for this cool meme!

Shadow Shot Sunday - New eatery with a Side of Shadows

We look at shadows where we find them. So for Shadow Shot Sunday 2, I go back a mere week where Patti and I attended a new restaurant opening in nearby Derby. The River Rock Tavern is the latest in a series of eateries in this spot, but do think this is the best looking one so far - maybe because we never had such delicacies as deep fried pickles before (they were delicious :) Naturally there were shadows emanating along the beautiful brick walls. I am not sure if the shadows were to be an Apéritif or an Entrée. Tasty though...

SOOC - More Giving for the Holiday

We who have good fortune yet complain about minor things may lose perspective about those who have much less at Christmas time. So for Straight out of the Camera - SOOC, I offer pics from an event Patti attended on December 23, the Christmas distribution of food and presents at St. Vincent de Paul Helping Hands of the Valley in Derby.

Bags of food and gifts for the needy were graciously packed and brought to the recipients vehicles. Giving is the reason for the season, the idea of giving never gets old...

Shadow Shot Sunday - Watercolors

We look for shadows in many places, sometimes the shadows are bold, some subtle.

For  Shadow Shot Sunday 2, I offer the latter. Our friend and Valley Arts Council (VAC) President held a watercolor course for grown-ups at the Derby Public Library last month.

The seasonal subject was Reindeer. This was not a serious look at art, but a place to let your inner artist enjoy working with an unfamiliar medium.

Rich is a great teacher, one who encourages his students to try to expand their artistic skills and not. worry about technique.

Patti wrote about this class and her pictures showcase the pleasure we believe anyone can find in art.  And for shadow watchers, they are all over the room, but quietly lying under the artists of the day...

SOOC - House Decorations

Up north, I believe, there seems a desire to add lights and decoration to many a homestead seems to take hold (although for myself, wheelchairs kind of preclude such activity :). So, a couple of pics will showcase this phenomenon for Straight out of the Camera - SOOC. Here are two houses in nearby Derby Connecticut whose bold LED colors stand out in the winter evening. And pixelated  views are almost unnoticeable at nights. The decorations are subtle too - decorations I'd consider that would look very nice on our humble abode especially if snow were on the ground. Straight out of the night...

Shadow Shot Sunday - Mirror Finish

Shadow Shot Sunday 2 is a fun meme that allows us to see shadows and reflections in a unique way, sometimes even artistic. The always lovely Patti visited the Osborne Homestead Museum in Derby CT for the the 30th year that the house has been decorated for the public viewing. Local garden clubs have decorated the home following the theme of "Holiday at the Farm."

This was taken in one of the bedrooms, and why I like it is that as we look up yo see the top of the mirror, and cannot. Hey if we look down we area actually looking up. Our eyes have been fooled...shadows and reflections abound!

Wordless Wednesday - Derby Time Capsule

A time capsule from 1915 was opened on Friday at the Derby CT Elks. A great look at life a century ago was unearthed! Patti was there and besides getting pictures, wrote a unique story...see NC Sue
